The original is probably native to the Irish county of Ulster, possibly derived from a Scottish original, is popular in the northern counties of Ireland, and, with variable text, is reported in Canada and Scotland, where it has probably been composed. With its various variations of lyrics, the song is a farewell (or goodbye?) Song for the crews leaving port and their loved ones.
